http://beranger.org/index.php?article=2029
A good Indian is a de...* oh, sorry, the wrong movie. And the wrong Indian.
In the hoaxing article Data Can Now Be Stored on Paper, somebody named Sainul Abideen (it seems there is more than one Sainul Abideen in Kerala!) claims to be "a Kerala student". Whatever.
Guess what?
«...the Rainbow Versatile Disc (RVD) can store 90 to 450 GB.
While a CD costs Rs.15 (SR1.25), his paper or plastic-made RVD will cost just about Rs.1.50 and has 131 times more storage capacity.
Sainul, who has just turned 24, says that instead of using zeroes and ones for computing, he used geometric shapes such as circles, squares and triangles for computing which combine with various colors and preserve the data in images.»
Let's get real. This is a hoax propagated by several sites, and this doesn't make it more real.
ArsTechnica sets it right: 256GB paper storage claims simply don't add up:
«However, despite technological advances in scanning and printing technology since those days, Abideen's claims quite simply do not hold water. A little bit of math is in order here. Starting with a scanner with a maximum resolution of 1,200 dots per inch, this leads to a maximum of 1,440,000 dots per square inch, or just over 134 million dots on a sheet of standard 8.5" by 11" paper (excluding margins).
...say that the scanner can accurately pick out 256 shades of color for each dot. That's a single byte per dot, making the final calculation easy: a maximum theoretical storage of 134MB, which would likely go down to under 100MB after error correction.
...
In the end, a picture may be worth a thousand words, but it cannot be worth half a thousand megabytes.»
TechWorld is even more detailed: Can you get 256GB on an A4 sheet? No way!
«Abideen stated that he could store 2.7GB of data in a square inch, and up to 450GB on a large sheet of paper - which he was then photographed with.
But following huge interest in the story, Mr Abideen's claims have come under determined scrutiny across the Internet, with a broad consensus that it is in fact impossible to store that amount of information with the apparatus he has outlined.
...
Alex Young, director of technical marketing at RAID specialist Infortrend Europe said: "With today's laser printer technology (600 dpi or 1200 dpi), it will be hard to achieve this. Also from today's scanner technology, the scanner has to be very precise and free of dust..."
A storage expert, Robin Harris, agreed: "Mr. Abideen has misplaced a few decimal places. Modern offset presses used to print magazines, which he suggests as a medium operate at about 300 dpi, or about 8.7 million dots on an A4 sheet, or 35 million dots with four color printing. There is no lossless way to compress 256 GB (or 2 trillion bits) of data into 35 million dots, or even 35 billion dots. It is the storage equivalent of perpetual motion."»
Lengthy explanation follows — don't miss it if you're still buying the whole thing.
IT Soup:
«This shows how technically illiterate the news reporters are.. The idea of storing something in paper is good, but trusting someone blindly when they say they are showing a movie from a piece of paper is absolutely
...
update 3: I am an Indian and there are many Indians who are brilliant and hardworking, the graduates from IIT are the best in the world!»
Slashdot had it a few days ago.
Sainul Abideen, the fake of the month.
_______
*A good Indian is an honest Indian, that is. Which our story doesn't hold.
