A very large number of readers sent in stories about one or the other of the two new claims to have unlocked the iPhone for use on other GSM carriers. A New Jersey teenager, George Hotz, posted instructions for unlocking the iPhone using a soldering gun and a lot of patience. This is from coverage in a local NJ paper: "If someone handed him an iPhone new out of the box, he could modify it in 'about an hour,' he said. A person following his directions might take 'a good 12 hours,' the teen estimated." Hotz has put up a YouTube video substantiating his claim, and is conducting an eBay auction for one of his two hacked phones. The other hack is by a commercial outfit called iPhoneSIMfree.com, whose claim Engadget has verified. The company will be selling licenses to the hack, minimum quantity 500, at a price not yet announced. These hacks are much bigger news for those outside America. Expect to see an industry spring up to meet European (and Asian?) demand for freed iPhones.
FULL HARDWARE UNLOCK OF IPHONE DONE
Yes thats right, we have an unlocked iPhone. The hardware is only used to unlock the iPhone, and can be removed after it's unlocked. Thanks to gray, iProof, geohot, dinopio, lazyc0der, and an anonymous contributor for making this possible. Thanks also to everyone who donated and stuck with us in #iphone.unlock. Our group has agreed to release the method in one week. The current method involves taking apart your phone and doing some complicated soldering, with a high probablity of a bricked phone. Although after the phone is unlocked all the hardware can be removed. We hope to find a software unlock very soon. So in one week exactly from this blog post(thats less than the time it takes to ship a turbosim) we will release simple step by step instructions for unlocking, probably not even involving hardware. Sorry about the wait, but I assure you it will be worth it.
First of all, I am geohot, and I will be linking to this auction from my blog to prove it. This is the worlds second unlocked iPhone(outside of apple vaults), and your chance to own a piece of mobile telephone history. The first phone in the youtube video remains safely in my pocket at all times. But the second one, the one unlocked live on the blog is available here. This was the most hyped unlock for arguably the most hyped product in history. This is the iPhone from the blog, that was unlocked live for the world @ http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com
This is the closest you can ever get to the first unlocked phone, as I use the first as my personal cell phone.
This phone is ready to work with any SIM card. I patched out activation, so you can just pop in the sim and go. This is the only iPhone on ebay right now that can claim that. The wires for the testpoint are taped to the battery inside the phone. They are easy to access after you open the phone. The modem already has the 3.14 firmware. Be aware that an update will reset this phone to being locked, but I left all the files required for unlocking on the phone. You will always be able to reunlock this phone. The soldering on the testpoint is very well done and epoxied in place.
I'm not just including the iPhone in the auction. You'll get
* The 4GB iPhone, signed by geohot, with no damage at all
* The world first serial dock, the one the serial interface was discovered on
* And the official unlock switch from the blog.
Soon, you will be able to buy unlocked iPhones everywhere, in fact probably before this auction ends. But this is the one that started it all. The one unlocked while the steps were posted live on the blog. This isn't just an unlocked iPhone, this is a piece of history.
I'm starting the bidding at $540, the price of the phone+the level convertor.
George Hotz calls it "a piece of history". The first successfully unlocked iPhone is now available to buy on popular auction site eBay.
17 year-old George Hotz has announced that he has successfully hacked an iPhone - and is actually using it with a T-Mobil service!
If you'd like to unlock your iPhone, Hotz has posted very detailed instructions on how to do it yourself! As for the eBay sale of the phone he unlocked, George Hotz wants to make it clear:
This is the phone that was unlocked live here this morning. It includes the phone, the world's first serial dock, and the official unlock switch from the blog.
As a note, if you are only bidding on this to get an unlocked iPhone, don't. There are much cheaper and easier ways to get one. This is a piece of cell phone history. I have no intention of ever starting an unlocking service.
It was just a matter of time. Now, George Hotz, age seventeen, has a unique claim on hacker fame (or infamy, according to your point of view). Mr Holz has figured out how to unlock the iPhone:
“…George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., spent his last summer before college figuring out how to “unlock” the iPhone, freeing it from being restricted to a single carrier, AT&T Inc.
The procedure, which the 17-year-old posted on his blog Thursday, raises the possibility of a cottage industry springing up to buy iPhones, unlocking them and then selling them to people who don’t want AT&T service or can’t get it, particularly overseas.”
