Every Ubuntu user can participate in the Ubuntu community. Here are some starting points for people who want to help shape the direction that Ubuntu takes.

Join the Ubuntu community today. You don't have to ask permission to participate - join us on #ubuntu and find your niche!

Ubuntu is particularly proud of the fact that people make substantial contributions from many different countries. That diversity is a great strength for Ubuntu, and we would welcome more participants from countries that don't yet have an Ubuntu representation.
Ways to participate

Help make Ubuntu suit your own needs better, and also make it a better gate to the open source world for other users:

As a member of the Ubuntu community you can participate in many different ways:
Ubuntu package selection

Help choose which packages will be installed by default in an Ubuntu desktop installation. This is one of the most critical decisions the Ubuntu team have to take with each release.

Our goal is to choose a basic subset of the huge variety of open source packages, resulting in a desktop installation that a new user would find interesting and comprehensive. You are welcome to propose new packages for inclusion in the Ubuntu default desktop installation, please follow the Package Selection Proposal process.
Maintainer participation

Become a member of the Ubuntu Maintainers Team and get the ability to upload packages to Ubuntu. Once you are a member of the team you can make changes to ANY package in the distribution, though it's considered polite to discuss those changes with other people who are working on that package.

Bug fixing

Improve the quality of Ubuntu by finding and helping to fix bugs in the distribution. You can file bugs right away in Ubuntu bugzilla and send patches and fix suggestions to the same place.
Ideas and brainstorming

* Participate in discussions and brainstorming on the Ubuntu Wiki, where we work on the fastest-moving documents before they are ready for publication on the main web site.
* Add your ideas to Idea Pool for features you'd like to see in Ubuntu, products, marketing suggestions or any other ideas you'd like to add here.
* HoaryHedgehog is in production, due for release in April 2005. Please read Hoary feature goals for more information and add your suggestions.

Community response activity

* Join in email discussions on the Ubuntu Mailing Lists for users, developers, and people that just want to hear announcements.
* Join the forums and respond to requests for help.
* Join the Ubuntu IRC channel: #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net

Translate Ubuntu and Documentation

Help to translate existing applications, web pages and documentation to your country's local languages. Help produce documentation to assist those new to Ubuntu and to Linux find their way around this new world.

* Check out the Translation team and Documentation teams
* Begin a local community - check language support to see what is already happening in the local communities.
* Join the Translator and Documentation mailing lists and IRC channels.
