更新管理器到底出了什么问题？

我用的Ubuntu8.04 版系统，更新管理器二个月前出错,重装后能正常升级。好景不常又第二次出错，情况与上次一样出现以下错误报告：
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
按提示用终端手动输入 dpkg --configure -a后出现以下提示
dpkg: 无法识别的选项 -o
（上略）
输入 dpkg --help 可获得安装和卸载软件包的有关帮助 [*]；
使用“dselect”或是“aptitude”就能在友好的界面下管理软件包；
又从官方指南中用二个修正包管理器命令：sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get -f install
得到以下提示：

按照说明，应该运行一下命令:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

系统已经给出了提示：E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem，看不懂英文吗?
