two problems, please help me~

Hi! I'm new here, and have two problems with my Ubuntu 7.10. Hope you guys can help me~

1. My "pidgin internet messenger" doesn't work. After I run this application , a bar indicating "Starting Pidgin Inter.." appears in the bottom of screen, then it disappers and nothing happens at all.

2. I can't type Chinese. Even though the Chinese item is selected in "Language Support" and there is
"Pinyin" in the "SCIM Input Method Setup", I just cannot triggers it by pressing "Ctrl + Space" or "Shift + Space"

1。 you can download the newest resource package from its website reinstall pidgin, the one build in the system is too old to make it work;
1. that's because you haven't install the Chinese language support package, and you can install it follow the actions below: go to system - Administration-Language Support, in the language list you choose Chinese,the system will download the package and install it automatically..
I believe the best idea is you go to the WIKI first before you post the problem here, the WIKI is fucking great, you can try it!!!
