[问题]How to exit X-window and enter pure console?

I'm in ubuntu now. But still didn't install chinese input app.

I want 2 use dispupgrade to upgrade my system, but there are some important warnings in debian reference doc:

重要提示!不要使用telnet、rlogin、rsh或在要升级的计算机上由xdm、gdm、kdm管理的X会话进行升级。因为它们很可能在升级时被终止，那将造成一个因未完全升级而无法访问的系统。
so how can i exit from X-window and enter the pure console env? Or how to login to pure console env while the system startup?

btw, any one knows how to involke the fcitx?
apt-get install fcitx
I installed it like this, then use 'CTRL + SPACE' to involke it, but nothing appear.
