I've been using Ubuntu for 1 month. It is pretty gratifying.
But there's still one thing concerning me.
My thinkpad's inner fan is a little bit noisy.
1 more noise at running ubuntu than XP but this is acceptable
2 fan noise disappears AND Ubuntu is running far more smoothly once using my uni's wireless network with a proxy instead of my home wireless LAN, and meanwhile the Avahi network service discovery is automatically disabled, coz it doesnt support .local domain, etc. But network is working without problems.
Thus, I guess Avahi network service discovery consumes system resources, slows down the os and heat up the laptop, making fan run frantically.
Am I correct? Is it necessary or possible to disable the service by default? Anyway, what is the service exactly about? Is it vital or not?
