ATI RAGE XL 8MB pci显卡问题

IBM xseries 335 双至强 3.20G 2GRAM 146GSCSI硬盘 ATI RAGE XL 8MBPCI显卡

安装UBUNTU9.04成功
安装UBUNTU8.10成功

一开始显示器的分辨率均不能调整，UBUNTU9.04表现不是很稳定，安装开源ATI驱动和修改XORG.CONF文件后几次当机黑屏，后桌面管理器干粹罢工不工作了，登录系统后什么也不显示，远程SSH却能登录。没办法拿出ubuntu8.10安装盘，改装ubuntu8.10版。
ubuntu8.10从推出我就开始使用，感觉好像它有自我保护机制，几次系统因为乱修改险些崩溃，回退机制让ubuntu8.10重启后竟能起死回生。一直稳定的工作在我的台式机（AMD 3800＋ 2G＋GeforceGT7300）上，里面用虚拟机安装了winxp，相互配合竟能相得益彰。在服务器上安装完ubuntu8.10后，还是感觉ubuntu8.10在速度和稳定性方面比ubuntu9.04要强，所以劝大家蚕不是特别需要还是不要盲目升级的好。

安装完ubuntu8.10后，显示器的分辨率依然是不能调整，简单修改xorg.conf文件，加入了显示器的横向和纵向频率，以及几种分辨率的数值设定，重启系统，ubuntu8.10提示设置错误，然后选择创建新的显示配置，我在home主目录找到xorg.conf.new文件，打开内容如下：

然后，我备份了/etc/X11/xorg.conf文件后，将此文件复制到/etc/X11/目录下覆盖原文件，重启后不报错，但显示分辨率依然不能调整。后在原文件试加入显示器的纵横向的扫描频率，和显示模式后登录，屏幕分辨率和显示器的刷新率即可实现修改调整，我的显示器是CRT三星997MB＋，修改的文件如下 ：

可真不容易，现在楼主还有8MB显存的老PCI显卡，我一直想找块珍藏，没找到。
服务器为什么不使用8043LTS呢？

对于这种老显卡，似乎不用装什么驱动，网上也找不到专门的驱动，主要是和xorg.conf的设置有关系
