I m Newbie - Where to start? ［已解决]

I have tons of questions - hope you can help :!

Finally I decide to install Linux: and I choose ubuntu.
Q1: Is ubuntu good enough? Why do you use ubuntu ?

I try to keep my winXP as primary, so I m going to install ubuntu in a virture machine.
I tried vmware, but my mouse does not scroll !( I tried virtureBox, sounds everything is slow !(
Q2: Which virture machine will you recommend me? Or , would you prefer other method of installation?

Most of my time on computer is doing: PHP+MySQL, HTML, sometimes inkScape+Gimp
Lots of MP3 + Video, eBooks
Q3: What will you advise to install the ubuntu ?

Reason to install Ubuntu: to have Chinese in my office pc, and hopefully, learn some Linux,
I learnt a lot yesterday, most useful commend is
cat file1 file2 > file3
And that is a killer of winXP

I m in a world of HTML - I usually write documents in HTML instead of .doc

But when I open ubuntu, most websites look no good. Even ubuntu.com.

Q4. So why do you use ubuntu? Do you have encouraging stories?

1。cuz it can't be easier for u to install & manage software due to its excellent pakage manager. and it's more humane than other ditros.
2. burn a cd and install on a real machine
3. read doc first, or u may check my signature

I start to feel that, I can not share files with my winXP, so

Q5: What is swap? do i need to set up something here ?

Q6: What is ext3? I saw some posts in the newbie section, still have no idea

I m currently using my Apache's localhost to upload/download files between winXP and ubuntu.
Q7: Is there any convenient way to share files?

After 2 hours experiment, i definitely feel that VirtureBox is slower, I set 512M ram for ubuntu@VirtureBox, but it is slow that ubuntu@vmware (256M)
Any idea of my Q2 ?

5。swap is so called virtual memory, similar to the pagefile of xp. the differece is: it has to be an independent partition.
6. a file system, like ntfs
7. of cuz u have. if ur xp has a ntfs or fat32 partition, just copy paste or cut as u please. note that u need to install ntfs-3g if u wanna write sth to ntfs partition.

I install /un-install a lot today, and I lost my beautiful Chinese fonts in the Firefox! Dear me :!

man, referring to your original post,
i assume you have ubuntu cd.
try to boot your pc with ubuntu cd, then you can get a bit play with ubuntu, ie, how it works, etc.
when you feel comfortable with it, try to install it on your pc, not on the drive where you installed your windows but any other drives will do you a good.
you shouldnt have any problem with it, i'd say.
i start using ubuntu because im doing my computing papers, and the they use kubuntu on the PCs at school. i found it really is easy to right html codes on ubuntu.lol.
give it a go, you will love it.
