联想420A用的是AMD吗?看似一个ACPI的问题,在启动电脑时加入内核参数noacpi 试试?三种方法:
(1)在启动到grub菜单时,仍选中你平常进入ubuntu linux的项,按e键编辑,在末尾加入 noacpi 或acpi=off
(2)在/boot/grub/memu.list文件的kernel启动参数里加上noacpi
(3)在BIOS里设置禁用acpi
也许10月份推出的ubuntu 8.10能解决这个BUG。网上还找到一篇文章,以供参考:

我真该早看这个帖子,也不至于走弯路。
以前按照网上其它的教程,安装3D,但重启机器之后,桌面就变成了屏幕的三分之一大小,只好删掉。
试了两次都失败了。
刚才看了这个帖子,按楼主的教程一步步,很快就设置好了,重启机器之后,完全正常。

你运行这个命令前,需要把“新立得软件管理器”关掉。

很明显,显卡驱动没有安装成功,你试试安装低版本一些的显卡驱动。
