Here are some software projects for Ubuntu that are available as paid bounties. You'll have to submit a proposal and some references if you want an advance on the bounty. The 2004 budget for bounties is USD 100,000. We also use donated funds to contribute to the bounty fund.

Bounty process

2. We will usually have some public discussion on the ubuntu-developers mailing list or wiki to establish the exact specification. The community has a chance to critique the bounty proposal and so that the owners of a project have a chance to have their say on code that may be included in their work.
3. Submit a formal proposal which will be published in relevant fora. Others might submit competitive proposals.
4. Depending on the nature of the work, we might make a commencement award to you to get you off the ground.
5. Specify your bounty completion date and keep us informed on progress.
6. Once the code is accepted, to the satisfaction of people identified before you started (for example, the project owners if it involves work extended an existing project), we pay the agreed bounty.
7. Bounties can and will expire. We will update the site with details.
8. The Ubuntu Community Council's decision is final. In the event we have several competing submissions for a bounty, all completed within a month of the first one, we will award the bounty to the implementation we think is best.
Python work
Ubuntu prefer the community to contribute work in Python. We develop our own tools and scripts in Python and it's much easier for us to integrate your work if you use the same platform. Here are some Python-related projects that are up for bounties:

Python is a great glue language. Ubuntu is open to requests for funding work that needs to be done to make Python the most widespread common scripting language on the net. Please contact us with your ideas and proposals.

We'd like to see the development of common document object model standards and terminology across OpenOffice, Abiword, Gnumeric, Agnubis, Sodipodi and other Gnome applications. If anybody out there is good at drafting such specifications and is interested, please get in touch.

Thunderbird message filing intelligence: $500
As an optional extra to the Quick Filing extension for Thunderbird developed in a previous bounty, we would like to see Bayesian learning for message filing. For example, we generally have a folder for correspondence with a person or a company, or a project. When one presses the Quick File hotkey, it would be great if Mozilla Thunderbird automatically pre-populated the dropdown listbox of folders with its best guess as to where one wants that message filed.
It could use the sender, the subject and the body, and learn from previous filing decisions. Bayesian filtering of junk mail has worked really well for me in Mozilla, so we would hope that after using it for a while, it would be making fairly good guesses as to where I want to file a given message. There is further commentary at Mozilla Bug #181866.
Browser error pages (Mozilla Bug #28586): $500
Error dialogs slow down the browsing process, especially when one is using tabbed browsing and opening up multiple links in background tabs to be read later. There has been some work on replacing the dialogs with error pages, but this work needs significant improvement before the default behaviour can be changed.
Given that work has already taken place, we would like anyone who steps up to the plate on this bounty to consult with people already involved to figure out a fair way to divide the proceeds. We will need to know what you want to work on in advance, so there is no duplication of effort.
Thunderbird SMTP message queueing (Mozilla Bug #136871): $100
See the Bugzilla bug for details. When using the Offline extension, and reconnecting, and sending Unsent Messages, we'd like Thunderbird to try to intelligently re-use the SMTP connection instead of opening a new connection for each message.
